Personal and Social Consequences of Psychotropic Substance Use: A Population-Based Internet Survey (2022)

<i>Background and objectives</i>: Drug abuse has become a major worldwide health concern among all age groups. The present study analyses substance misuse and its social and personal consequences using a population-based internet survey in Spain. <i>Materials and Methods</i>: Screening for drug abuse (of alcohol, marijuana/hashish and psychostimulants) and its related risks and problems was performed using the Car, Relax, Alone, Forget, Friends, Trouble (CRAFFT) score. Socio-demographic factors,

Progress in treatment of pathological neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury (2024)

Pathological neuropathic pain is a common complication following spinal cord injury. Due to its high incidence, prolonged duration, tenacity, and limited therapeutic efficacy, it has garnered increasing attention from both basic researchers and clinicians. The pathogenesis of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury is multifaceted, involving factors such as structural and functional alterations of the central nervous system, pain signal transduction, and inflammatory effects, posing significan

Acupuncture as Part of Multimodal Analgesia for Chronic Pain (2022)

Acupuncture, deemed well-tolerated and safe to use, has been increasingly studied and is regarded as effective in clinical practice, but its efficacy is limited by the lack of well-conducted, high-quality clinical trials, lower quality evidence, and conflicting study results. Additionally, the exact analgesic mechanism of acupuncture remains to be fully elucidated. Increasing evidence supports the role of acupuncture as therapy in the treatment of cancer, neck, and back pain and functional dyspe

Modulating Neurological Complications of Emerging Infectious Diseases: Mechanistic Approaches to Candidate Phytochemicals (2021)

Growing studies are revealing the critical manifestations of influenza, dengue virus (DENV) infection, Zika virus (ZIKV) disease, and Ebola virus disease (EVD) as emerging infectious diseases. However, their corresponding mechanisms of major complications headed for neuronal dysfunction are not entirely understood. From the mechanistic point of view, inflammatory/oxidative mediators are activated during emerging infectious diseases towards less cell migration, neurogenesis impairment, and neuron

Unmet Needs of Australians in Endometriosis Research: A Qualitative Study of Research Priorities, Drivers, and Barriers to Participation in People with Endometriosis (2023)

<i>Background and Objectives</i>: Endometriosis causes significant personal and societal burden. Despite this, research funding lags behind other chronic conditions. Determining where to prioritise these limited funds is therefore vital. Research priorities may also differ between individuals with endometriosis and clinicians/researchers. The aim of this research project is to explore research priorities and factors shaping participation in endometriosis research from the perspective of people w

Measuring attentional bias in smokers during and after psychosocial stress induction with a Trier Social Stress Test in virtual reality via eye tracking (2023)

Results indicate that AB is not a persistent trait in smokers, but is context dependent. It is suggested that emotional learning processes such as smoking in the context of relief after stress may contribute to changes of AB both in terms of increased initial attention and deeper stimulus processing. Additionally, the potential of the VR-TSST to induce psychosocial stress could be replicated.

Prevalence and Psychiatric Correlates of Illicit Substance Use in UK Undergraduate Students (2023)

This study examined the prevalence of illegal drug use in UK students and motivators behind such behavior. Additionally, we explored possible relationships between substance use, psychosocial motivators, and psychiatric distress. A group (<i>n</i> = 543) of students completed online measures of substance use, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and insomnia. A series of reasons behind their use were ranked based on importance. Reported cannabis, cocaine, nitrous oxide, ketamine, and MDMA use

Old Dog, New Tricks: A Review of Identifying and Addressing Youth Cannabis Vaping in the Pediatric Clinical Setting (2023)

Cannabis vaping has emerged as a predominant mode of cannabis use among United States (US) adolescents and young adults (AYA) primarily due to the popularity of modifiable designs of vaping devices coupled with changes in cannabis policies and increased availability of cannabinoid products. New methods for cannabis vaping by e-liquid/oil vaping, dry plant vaping, and cannabis concentrate vaping (ie, dabbing) have had high uptake among American youth with unclear long-term health implications. Is

Views on and experiences with medicinal cannabis among Canadian veterans who live with pain: A qualitative study (2023)

Most veterans initiated cannabis use to manage the symptoms of preexisting medical and/or mental health conditions. Despite some negative side effects, most veterans reported improvements in their overall quality of life, sleep, relationships, mood, and pain. Concern remains around the discrepancy between veterans' qualitative reports of beneficial outcomes from medicinal cannabis use and equivocal findings around the benefit-to-harm ratio in the wider literature. Currently, the VAC reimbursemen

Extract and Active Principal of the Neotropical Vine Souroubea sympetala Gilg. Block Fear Memory Reconsolidation (2019)

<b>Background:</b> <i>Souroubea sympetala</i> Gilg. is a neotropical vine native to Central America, investigated as part of a targeted study of the plant family Marcgraviaceae. Our previous research showed that extract of <i>S. sympetala</i> leaf and small branch extract had anxiolytic effects in animals and acts as an agonist for the GABAA receptor at the benzodiazepine binding site. To date, the potential effects of <i>S. sympetala</i> and its constituents on reconsolidation have n

Cannabis and cannabidiol use among autistic and non-autistic adults in the UK: a propensity score-matched analysis (2021)

Results indicate a higher prevalence and frequency of CBD use, but not cannabis use, among autistic individuals compared with controls. Findings also suggest appropriate methods to disseminate cannabinoid-related support to autistic individuals, and indicate differences in the potential barriers autistic and non-autistic individuals may face when seeking cannabinoid-related support.

The Effects of Recreational Marijuana Legalization on Employment and Earnings (2022)

Despite nearly 70 percent of the American public supporting legalization of recreational marijuana, opponents argue that increased marijuana use may diminish motivation, impede cognitive function, and harm health, each of which could adversely affect adults' economic wellbeing. This study is the first to explore the impacts of recreational marijuana laws (RMLs) on employment and wages.Difference-in-differences estimates show little evidence that RMLs adversely affect labor market outcomes among m

The Chronobiological and Neuroprotective Mechanisms of Resveratrol in Improving Sleep (2025)

According to statistics, more than one-third of the global population currently experiences sleep problems, and about 10% of adults have been diagnosed with insomnia, a proportion that is increasing annually. Most currently used insomnia medications are not specifically developed but are discovered by chance, often resulting in unavoidable side effects like addiction. Thus, there is an urgent need to find safer and more effective therapeutic options. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound,

Cannabinoids for the Treatment of Glaucoma: A Review (2024)

Cannabinoids lower intraocular pressure. However, the effect is short-lived. There is also a lack of well-formulated ocular delivery system. The available evidence is inadequate to recommend the use of cannabinoids for the routine treatment of glaucoma.

Spinal neuron-glial crosstalk and ion channel dysregulation in diabetic neuropathic pain (2025)

Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) is one of the most prevalent complications of diabetes, characterized by a high global prevalence and a substantial affected population with limited effective therapeutic options. Although DNP is closely associated with hyperglycemia, an increasing body of research suggests that elevated blood glucose levels are not the sole inducers of DNP. The pathogenesis of DNP is intricate, involving the release of inflammatory mediators, alterations in synaptic plasticity, d
