Natural Alternatives for Pain Relief: A Study on Morus alba, Angelica archangelica, Valeriana officinalis, and Passiflora incarnata (2025)

Background: Chronic pain poses a major global health burden, often inadequately managed by conventional analgesics due to limited efficacy and side effects. In this context, plant-based therapies offer a promising alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and analgesic potential of four medicinal plants traditionally used for pain relief: Morus alba, Angelica archangelica, Valeriana officinalis, and Passiflora incarnata. Methods: Phytochemical analyses quantified total phenolic a

Oxidative Stress and Chronic Inflammation as Partners in Crime in Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (2025)

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the urinary bladder, characterized by chronic pain, increased urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia. Currently, no therapeutic option consistently provides long-term relief for all IC/BPS patients, likely due to the largely unknown mechanisms underlying the disease's development and progression. IC/BPS is considered a multifactorial disorder with a complex pathobiology that ultimately leads to unresolved

Role of Cannabinoid Receptors in Psychological Disorder (2020)

Cannabinoid receptors, located throughout the body, are part of the endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors are G protein-coupled receptors present from the early stages of gestation, which is involved in various physiological processes, including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory. Due to the lipophilic nature of cannabinoids, it was initially thought that these compounds exert several biological effects by disrupting the cell membrane nonspecifically. Recent biochemic

Factors Associated with Demand for Medical Cannabis Use among Breast Cancer Patients in Northern Thailand: A Cross-Sectional Study (2023)

We found substantial demand for MC use among breast cancer patients. Health literacy, social support, monthly household income, and attitudes about MC were significantly associated with demand for MC use. Therefore, improving health literacy, social support, and attitudes about MC, especially among breast cancer patients, could help increase demand for MC as a complementary and alternative medicine alongside cancer treatment.

Empathy‐related differences in the anterior cingulate functional connectivity of regular cannabis users when compared to controls (2023)

It has been reported that cannabis consumption affects the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a structure with a central role in mediating the empathic response. In this study, we compared psychometric scores of empathy subscales, between a group of regular cannabis users (85, users) and a group of non-consumers (51, controls). We found that users have a greater Emotional Comprehension, a cognitive empathy trait involving the understanding of the "other" emotional state. Resting state functional M

The influence of stress and social defeat on neurobiological reinforcement mechanisms across reward to withdrawal in nicotine addiction (2025)

Nicotine and cigarette/tobacco use continue to be a prevalent public health issue worldwide. The transition to nicotine addiction occurs through an allostatic cycle involving the stages of binging/intoxication, withdrawal/negative affective states, and preoccupation/anticipation. This review focuses on the psychological, neurobiological, and molecular mechanisms contributing to the negative affective state during withdrawal from nicotine with an emphasis on stress and how social defeat stress ca

Young Adults’ Knowledge of State Cannabis Policy: Implications for Studying the Effects of Legalization in Vermont (2022)

Findings suggest that 40% of Vermont young adults in the study were unaware of current state cannabis policy and that policy knowledge was lower in younger, less educated, Hispanic, and non-White young adults. Future research should explore using a measure of policy knowledge as an exposure or moderator variable to better quantify the effects of changes in cannabis legal status on perceptions and use in young people.

Visual analysis of the research frontiers, hotspots and trends of exercise therapy intervention in tumor-related sleep-wake disorders (2024)

The number of papers published and the research enthusiasm in this field show a steady upward trend. However, there is a lack of influential institutions and scholars, and there is relatively little research collaboration across countries/regions/institutions. The scientific research influence of institutions and scholars in most European and American countries/regions is significantly ahead of that of institutions and scholars in Asian and African countries/regions. The Pathophysiology of Hepatic Encephalopathy at the Level of Gut-Liver-Brain Axis: The Role of Resident Innate Immune Cells (2024)

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) reflects a wide spectrum of frequent and complex neurological complications that are associated with advanced liver diseases. It significantly impacts the quality of life and daily activities of those affected. Despite many investigations, the precise pathophysiology of HE is still under discussion. One contributing factor believed to be responsible for HE is the accumulation of neurotoxic substances in the brain such as ammonia, mercaptans, short-chain fatty acids, a

Management in severe dementia: recommendations of the Scientific Department of Cognitive Neurology and Aging of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (2022)

ABSTRACT Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative dementias have a progressive course, impairing cognition, functional capacity, and behavior. Most studies have focused on AD. Severe dementia is associated with increased age, higher morbidity-mortality, and rising costs of care. It is fundamental to recognize that severe dementia is the longest period of progression, with patients living for many years in this stage. It is the most heterogeneous phase in the process, with different a

Behavioural patterns and dangers: a mixed-methods exploration of simultaneous polysubstance use and intervention strategies among Swiss adolescents (2024)

This study underscores the urgency of developing targeted, youth-centred interventions that resonate with the lived realities of adolescents, aiming not only to reduce substance use but also to address the broader psychosocial factors contributing to simultaneous polysubstance use. By shedding light on the complex dynamics of adolescent polysubstance use, our research contributes to the ongoing dialogue on effective prevention strategies, advocating for a holistic approach encompassing education

Impact of Marijuana Use on Lung Health (2024)

The widespread use of marijuana in the context of increasing legalization has both short- and long-term health implications. Although various modes of marijuana use-smoked, vaped, or ingested-may lead to a wide scope of potential systemic effects, we focus here on inhalational use of marijuana as the most common mode with the lung as the organ that is most directly exposed to its effects. Smoked marijuana has been associated with symptoms of chronic bronchitis and histopathologic changes in airw

Increasing CB2 Receptor Activity after Early Life Stress Prevents Depressive Behavior in Female Rats (2024)

Early adversity, the loss of the inhibitory GABAergic interneuron parvalbumin, and elevated neuroinflammation are associated with depression. Individuals with a maltreatment history initiate medicinal cannabis use earlier in life than non-maltreated individuals, suggesting self-medication. Female rats underwent maternal separation (MS) between 2 and 20 days of age to model early adversity or served as colony controls. The prelimbic cortex and behavior were examined to determine whether MS alters
