Results add to our understanding of the acute neurocognitive effects of THC. Slower cognitive efficiency after THC was highly heterogeneous, and was related to both recent cannabis use and subjective drug effects. These findings support the notion that acute effects of cannabis on cognitive efficiency (GNG drift rate) are reduced by individuals' tolerance to cannabis.
This study demonstrates that diazepam can partially restore hippocampal CA1 dysconnectivity in CHR-P individuals, suggesting that modulation of GABAergic function might be useful in the treatment of this clinical group.
Dopamine D2 receptor (D2R)-mediated signalling is involved in reward, motivation and alcohol use disorder. Perturbation of the D2R system may influence an individual's response to alcohol. Alternative splicing of the D2R gene generates two isoforms: D2 long form (D2L) and D2 short form (D2S). It is unclear whether differences in the expression of D2L and D2S influence alcohol's effects. Here we examined if altered expression levels of either D2R isoform would influence alcohol effects on reward-
Objective: Psychedelic drug therapy is banned in all countries of the world except Australia, where the government regulatory watchdog, the Therapeutic Goods Administration, is planning to allow approved psychiatrists, as of July 1, 2023, to prescribe psilocybin to treat depression and MDMA to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, a move precipitated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s designation of these two drugs as “breakthrough therapy”. The objective of the present article is to dem
Psychoactive plants have been an integral part of human societies for centuries, serving various cultural, spiritual, and therapeutic purposes. This review explores the ethnopharmacological and therapeutic aspects of psychoactive plants. The present study emphasizes existing knowledge on the psychoactive constituents and pharmacological properties of certain plants, shedding light on their psychoactive effects and potential therapeutic applications. Additionally, the present review examines the
Abstract Introduction Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) are widely used psychoactive drugs and their potential use in psychiatric medicine is currently generating interest. The mechanism by which these drugs may assist recovery in addiction, mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is still not well understood. Most investigations of the effects of these drugs on brain activity have focussed on cortical resting-state networks, however t

Abstract Background : Cigarette smoking is among the most harmful ways to consume nicotine and, troublingly, tends to be concentrated among socially marginalized groups of people, including those who identify their sexualities and genders in ways that classify them as sexual and gender minorities (SGM). Though some approaches to tobacco control in the United States may be considered harm reduction strategies (e.g. smoke-free environments), often abstinence is an explicitly-stated goal and discus
<b>Background and Objectives:</b> Fibromyalgia is a multifaceted and frequently misunderstood chronic pain disease marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain and cognitive/somatic dysfunction. This trial aims to contribute to the existing knowledge on treating fibromyalgia (FM) with medical cannabis (<i>Cannabis sativa</i> L.) and explore a safer and more effective cannabis administration method. The goal is to provide evidence-based findings that can guide alternative treatment options for FM pa
Abstract Background A common feature of Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is an intense reactivity to cannabis cues, which are becoming increasingly visible due to growth in the decriminalization, accessibility and marketing of cannabis products. The brain’s automatic reactivity to cannabis cues can trigger craving and subsequent use. This study aimed to test neural activity during cannabis cue-induced craving in non-treatment seeking individuals with moderate-to-severe CUD, with past attempts to cut

Cannabinoids, the active constituents of Cannabis sativa, replicate the effects of endogenous cannabinoids by engaging specific cannabinoid receptors, notably the CB1 receptor predominantly located in the central nervous system and the CB2 receptor primarily associated with immune function.Delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal bioactive cannabinoid in this plant has been approved as a prescription medication for managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting as well as anorexia.Furthermo
Many investigations have confirmed the link between a substance use disorder (SUD) and the COVID-19 pandemic's increased risk of infection and consequences. This narrative review aims to understand these issues from a pharmacological standpoint, as well as the pandemic's impact on forensic medicine. Research and review articles included in this review were selected through an extensive search of databases such as PubMed and the use of appropriate keywords e.g. “substance use disorder” and “COVID
There appear to be huge variations and aberrations in the reported data in COVID-19 2 years now into the pandemic. Conflicting data exist at almost every level and also in the reported epidemiological statistics across different regions. It is becoming clear that COVID-19 is a polymorphic inflammatory spectrum of diseases, and there is a wide range of inflammation-related pathology and symptoms in those infected with the virus. The host's inflammatory response to COVID-19 appears to be determine
This literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the use of complementary and alternative modalities for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, which pose a significant challenge in contemporary healthcare, often requiring long-term management with conventional therapies. It explores a diverse range of complementary and alternative therapies, including herbal remedies, dietary interventions, mind-body practices, and emerging therapies, in the context of the management of several autoim
Abstract Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is accompanied by activated neuro-immune pathways, increased physiosomatic and chronic fatigue-fibromyalgia (FF) symptoms. The most severe MDD phenotype, namely major dysmood disorder (MDMD), is associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative life events (NLEs) which induce cytokines/chemokines/growth factors. Aims To delineate the impact of ACE + NLEs on physiosomatic and FF symptoms in first episode (FE)-MDMD, and examine wh
Despite awareness about cannabis use patterns and identification of both harms and benefits, clinicians identified low rates of cannabis interventions and low levels of confidence in delivering interventions.
Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common psychiatric complication affecting nearly one-third of stroke survivors, leading to increased disability, mortality, and cognitive decline. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has proven effective in treating PSD through syndrome differentiation, yet existing animal models primarily reflect Western medical concepts and fail to incorporate the TCM principle of "" (treating the same disease with different methods). This paper provides a review of the current

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) refers to a decline in cognitive function in patients during and after cancer treatment and is mainly associated with the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy (CT). As CT is still an essential component in the treatment of many cancers and taking into account the fact that cancer survival rates are increasing, CRCI may negatively impact the quality of life and working capacity of a growing number of individuals, especially those treated with curative int
Weekly cannabis consumption based on standard delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) units appears to show good discrimination accuracy of cannabis use disorder at different severities and in different age groups. Safer levels of cannabis use, defined by low weekly standard THC unit consumption, could be recommended in lower risk cannabis use guidelines.
